"Nice Trip",Terminal West, Schiphol 1993

In 1993 Kaagman did a 65 meter long fresco for the new terminal West of Schiphol airport. In an Italian laminate factory impregnated paper was sprayed in pieces. After laminating they were transported to the Netherlands, where they were glued to wood, sawn and puzzled in the wall in the tax-free zone, the stop-over resting hall.

In the new Terminal West of airport Schiphol the mural was realised. Kaagman's Dutch Delft blue iconography is most manifest in this wallpainting. The Schiphol wall exists of hunderdandfifteen laminated panels. Kaagman used white and blue. The 16th century derived patterns enclose different images from Dutch traditional life.

The result is tranquil compared to the explosion of colours in the Waterloosquare-fence. It looks like a tiled wall in glossy Italian laminate (ABET). Enclosed in its cornermotifs the plates follow the architecture of windows and doors. Images like tulipfields, the Zeelandbridge and submarines are all typically Dutch. In that way Kaagman wants to continue the Delftblue tradition, but at the same time he creates a new image of the Netherlands.

In this context the artist regularly uses the word "Hollandising"; the making of all sorts of Dutch elements and symbols , the use of touristic cliche images like we know them from souvenirs. Kaagman intention is to reflect or critisize the commercialisation of Dutch culture. After intensive watching the observer will be surprised by all the elements that apparently contradict each other, but coincide into one message: this is Holland!

Een koe, stier Herman en een koeienmelker in de wei met electriciteitsmasten, onkruid en een reiger gevat in tegels met mauresken. Er onder zit een man te wachten in een stoel.
