Delft Blue 40-feet container symbolizes Amsterdam’s rise as a container port

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands – MARK VAN DER HORST – Deputy Mayor and Alderman for Port Affairs – just kicked off the ART-on-a-BOX project, which involves actual containers being painted by local artists. In the middle of the SAIL 2005 location, in front of the ‘Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ’ in Amsterdam, the artist HUGO KAAGMAN is now painting a 12-meter-long container. His contemporary artwork is inspired by the Delft Blue designs of the distant past. This container is the first in a series of twelve “art containers” that will be created by various Amsterdam artists and then used for transport purposes in the coming years.

Art-on-a-Box is a project launched by the Amsterdam Port Authority and local portrelated companies and organizations such as Ter Haak Group/ Container Company Amsterdam, Ceres Paragon Terminal, Oram and Amports. The campaign has been initiated to promote Amsterdam as a container port. The Port of Amsterdam recently received a strong boost by the start of two major container services between Europe and Asia. Says Mark van der Horst, “In its own distinctive manner, this art project is turning the spotlight on two elements that really characterize Amsterdam – an entrepreneurial spirit and artistic creativity.”

Van der Horst verricht opening Ceres Paragon Terminal 30 september 2005

Wethouder van der Horst (Verkeer, Vervoer en Infrastructuur en Zeehaven) verrichte vandaag, 30 september, de officiële opening van de Ceres Paragon Terminal. In het bijzijn van ondermeer Ambassadeur Komachi (Japan) gaf Van der Horst via een portofoon opdracht om twee containers te lossen. Art-on-a-box Een van de twee containers komt van het Art-on-a-boxproject. De Amsterdamse kunstenaar Hugo Kaagman, bekend om zijn moderne toepassingen van Delfts blauw, beschilderde tijdens Sail een grote (40-voets-)container temidden van het massale publiek. Nu de container gereed is, wordt hij gewoon gebruikt voor transport. Lange termijn beslissing Van der Horst sprak in zijn speech ondermeer zijn bewondering uit voor zijn voorgangers die een lange termijn beslissing als de bouw van de Ceresterminal aandurfden. Hij refereerde aan de problemen die onderweg overwonnen moesten worden. Met de woorden “Long-term vision pays off: slow and steady wins the race”, besloot hij zijn toespraak. Djoe Lan Tan.
